The Role of Media at M/H

Group Director of Media Primary Job Responsibility


The Group Director of Media will lead a department to focus on melding innovative media strategies with brilliant creative, and will constantly push the media industry to innovate in order to take full advantage of the landscape and drive success for client business.


The Group Director’s role is to provide media leadership on multiple businesses/brands. The individual in this role is responsible for providing strategic direction and demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of their client’s business as well as the overall technology/competitive landscape. The Group Director is responsible for cultivating client and media relationships specifically at senior levels. This individual is responsible for being the “ultimate” media consultant to the client and is charged with all general management aspects of the team, including team collaboration, team harmony, big-picture strategic thinking, and financial performance.


The Group Director’s role is also one of agency leadership. The individual in this position is responsible for contributing to agency and department initiatives, media operations, and new business efforts.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Media Planning and Execution:

  • Manage the work of assigned media groups, providing leadership, direction and motivation as appropriate
  • Direct the development of planning objectives and strategies that align with the client’s marketing objectives
  • Interpret research and provide insight and thought leadership that effectively translates brand marketing objectives into succinct media strategies
  • Research and implement new techniques and technologies that are relevant for clients’ traditional and digital media strategies
  • Oversee the analysis of program results and dialogue with client and internal team on informed strategic implications
  • Successfully identify all opportunities with existing clients, including ability to further M/H offerings
  • Create and negotiate yearly client contracts and supplemental proposals and manage account profitability
  • Deliver revenue growth goals established in conjunction with executive management, re-evaluate progress against revenue/profit goals monthly
  • Build and maintain relationships with media community; continue to develop partners and higher relationships for exchange of ideas
  • Contribute, participate and present in agency new business efforts and presentations
  • Provide inspiration for creative teams to develop great work and facilitate communications between departments

Client & Internal Relationships:

  • Build and maintain trusting, collaborative relationships with senior clients
  • Manage the flow of client media-related needs - create solutions and resolve problems and grow current business
  • Ensure collaboration among all agency departments; foster great teamwork
  • Actively represent M/H within industry (attending industry functions, joining local market committees, speaking engagements)

Strategic Thinking & Leadership:

  • Management of staffing media resources to project needs, track staff utilization, and lead hiring, promotions and performance reviews for team members
  • Demonstrate a deep knowledge of client brands, brands equity, consumer definition and motivations
  • Lead overarching strategic thinking, ensure media strategy is aligned and meets client objectives
  • View strategic goals in a broader business context, and establish priorities for key agency projects
  • Initiate long-term projects for teams that will contribute to greater agency revenue
  • Actively keep current with industry trends, media business and tools – buying systems, research, resources and associations
  • Ensure key information is provided to team regarding client issues, internal agency issues, changes in account status, etc.
  • Train, motivate and develop assigned staff

Communication Skills:

  • Encourage open, ongoing internal communication
  • Establish and maintain communications process with clients and agency service teams for each piece of business within the team
  • Direct the development of client presentations and other important communication; be clear, concise, and compelling
  • Adapt communications style to relevant audience
  • Required Experience and Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 15 + years of media planning experience, which includes progressive, large client management experience at a full service agency
  • Excellent presentation, writing and listening skills
