Managing Director, Program and Business Development

The Managing Director for Program and Business Development is responsible for planning and implementing American Councils program and business development for all regions of the organization s current and future activity. The position directs operations in the organization s Bids and Proposals Department to maintain and develop the organization s activity in core areas and works with foreign, foundation and private funders to achieve this goal. The Managing Director is particularly focused on identifying and cultivating new program models and funding sources. The Managing director also has responsibility for planning and executing the organization s business development strategies, while working in close cooperation with all members of senior management. The Managing Director is charged with overseeing development and execution of strategies to add new business aligned with American Councils mission by drawing on its strengths in educational development, programs, and services. The Managing Director reports to Executive Vice President.ResponsibilitiesOversee the development of proposals to a wide variety of funders in government and private sectors to maintain and develop core program activity;Provide comprehensive and strategic leadership in developing a multi-faceted strategic approach to grow annual revenue;Develop and strengthen relationships and alliances with private sector partners, foundations, and domestic and international funding agencies;Work collaboratively with individuals throughout the organization (including but not limited to senior staff, regional directors, country/office directors, program managers, and program officers) to plan and launch new initiatives and ensure utilization of best development practices;Provide oversight and coordination for American Councils business development team (staff and consultants) over a broad range of program and business development activities;Utilize staff resources within and across department lines to ensure initiatives are developed efficiently, relationships are established using existing contacts where possible and outreach is consistent with American Councils mission and focus;Manage and oversee the departments budget; review prior years performance and establish new goals; and provide reports on division activities to senior management and Board of TrusteesQualificationsMBA, Master s degree or PhD in relevant field;Knowledge of, and experience with, all aspects of grant-writing, international marketing, business development, promotion, and proposal development;Strong entrepreneurial motivational, listening, and leadership skills;Deep understanding of domestic and international funding;Strong background in both strategic planning and operations, with an understanding of how to create and deploy strategies across the full range of business development areas;Ability to work with existing and potential clients in prospecting for new business in the field;Solid skills in budget forecasting and planning;Ability to think strategically.Articulate, with proven ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing; Excellent interpersonal skills;Ability to travel periodically on a domestic and international basis;Ability to operate effectively in a team/collegial work environment.Minimum of 5 years experience managing business development with a successful track record identifying, pursuing and securing funding for new projects; andProficiency in at least one foreign language preferred.
